I played Olde Liberty on a weekday morning with a mid-level handicap friend, playing from the yellow tees.Pros:- The fairways are pretty consistently grown in, the rough is lush, and the greens are consistent and mostly healthy. Note that the rough is so deep that you are at risk of losing your ball if you are a few feet off the fairway, so track where your ball comes to rest carefully from the tee box.- The course has great variety from hole to hole, with tee shots that require left to right, right to left, and lay-ups. The course is contoured more than is immediately visible from the tee box, so be careful aiming until you get to know the course.- The putting green is large and rolls just like the greens on the course. There is a driving range too, though we did not use it.- At $25 to ride for 55+, the price is fair, and the gentleman in the clubhouse was friendly and moved us right along.Cons:- The carts are not in great shape; they don't accelerate smoothly, and to keep them going you need to keep the gas floored. We tried several carts and they were all the same. The cart paths are not quite level and the fairways have some rutting, so you should be prepared to get bounced around. This is not awful, just annoying. The course is not easily walkable, with really significant distances between some holes.- There are MANY bunkers- fairway and greenside- and most of them are poorly maintained. Some have vegetation growing in them, some are hard packed clay and pebbles, and one or two are actually white sand. My partner stopped trying to hit out of them after the 4th hole and I played defensively to avoid them.- There are many hazards to fly or lay up in front of, and the contours of the fairways will not be your friend. On tee shots heading towards a hazard, be careful to land well short so that the slopes and hard packed fairways don't steal your ball. There are no signs on the tee box to advise you of ideal landing yardage, which is disappointing.Overall, I find Olde Liberty to be an interesting track, but I cannot say that it is enjoyable. Given the huge number of bunkers and their poor state of repair, the deep rough, and the many forced carries, this track is more fatiguing than fun for me. That said, it is a fair test and a good value, so I will continue to visit every few months.
