If you know the course it can be a fun round. If you don't know the course you're in for a long day.

Drove almost two hours to meet an old golfing buddy of mine that moved to Winchester to play there and it was worth the four hours on the road. I told him to let me know when the leaves start changing so I can do the trip again. Other than the confusion of where the next tee was I loved every minute of the round and took so many pictures to show my local friends but none of the pictures come close to doing the course justice. If you want to get a good feel of the course watch the fly over videos on their site. Course was in great shape and the greens will give you a real challenge so take the extra time to figure out where to hit and read the green.

I would rate this an overall 3.5 out of 5. Having played both course (Rock and Boulder) several times, here is what you need to know: 1) Staff interaction with players has improved and is mixed. It's always been very nice inside the restaurant and pro shop (side note: the food is great). The starters - same - very courteous. The marshals - not as much, though this has improved. If they say cart path only, they mean it and will yell at you if you're even 2' off the path. 2) Condition of the courses - currently, the bunkers aren't raked and manicured, but to be fair, we are in the midst of COVID-19 and I imagine the staff is a skeleton crew. Other areas are starting to show some signs of lack of upkeep with weedy type grass beginning to infiltrate parts of the course. Fairways and tee boxes are in good shape fort the most part. Overall the courses are about a 7/10 (IMO) and provide a pleasant playing experience. 3) As an avid golfer for over 40 years and having played competitively, my criticisms come from a few design 'quirks' and some questionable things from the greenskeeper. There are a few green designs where there are wild undulations...I MEAN WILD. For example, hole #12 on the Rock has a green that pretty much has a bowl in the middle of it. It is nearly impossible to put the pin in some areas on this green and have a 'fair' hole. A back middle pin placement on this hole is literally unplayable, but it's there at times. Also, hole #15 on the Boulder...ridiculous...putt-putt green. Greenskeeper - with so many undulating greens, there needs to be more care to make pins accessible. They seem to always put pin placements right on the edge of a fall line between upper and lower tiers. They are just not accessible at times and can ruin a hole - hit 2 great shots and still guaranteed a poor chance at scoring because the greens and pins are not realistic. 4) For those of you unfamiliar with the course or looking for a destination place to play, it's worth the trip. Some very scenic holes with elevation changes, waste bunkers, doglegs, etc. It's a bit pricey ($60-70) on the weekend for 18 holes. Having said that, they are getting plenty of play...so your typical local Winchester golfer is liking it. Disclaimer - I'm currently taking advantage of a 'walking' membership that they offered for $119 per year for 2 years. This covers green fees only and is a great deal. With this being the only public course in Winchester, it provides a great way to go play a quick 9 in the afternoon whenever.
