Played Cypress Lakes during the week, mid-morning, from the gold tees, which played 5900 yards. Pros- The fairways are lush and the greens roll true, if not particularly fast- The collars are so manicured that you can putt, chip, or pitch as you like when close to the edge of the green- While largely typical sandhills scenery, the visuals are stunning on several holes on the front 9 that go through a marsh; on these, looking back from the green is a treat- The 11th hole has two 90 degree turns in the middle; a very interesting setup- The prices are great, a real value, and the pace of play was as fast as we cared to make it (we played as a twosome in 2.5 hours)Neutral- About half of the holes require you to shape your tee shot for best results, which adds to the level of challenge- Many of the greens, especially on the back 9, are elevated, which means they play a bit longer than the card indicates- Rough around the green can be deep and thick, making it a challenge to get up and down even from 10 yards offCons- Although the website mentions full service snack bar, they have closed this down, so only prepackaged snacks are available- Bunkers can be an adventure, lots of gravel/pebbles with the sand. and some have weeds growing around the edges- The rough is hit and miss; some is legitimate rough, some is hard packed dirt or loose sand, and some is fluffy thin bermuda over hard packed dirt or loose sand; hard to get grooved with so much variationOverall, the course was well-maintained, required lots of creative shotmaking, and was a great value. I believe this is the only course designed by Raymond Floyd's father, which adds a neat historical footnote to the track. I look forward to walking the course when the weather cools in the late fall. A bit out of the way, but well worth the occasional visit.
