Good course for a muni. $22 for non-resident. Very open, great place to play early in the season when you haven't gotten your swing down yet. The course was in good shape, even the greens. Went at 4pm on a Thursday and didn't have to wait at any holes. This place does get busy as the weather warms up though. You can be waiting for a while at the first par 3.

Great 9 hole layout if you time it right. Nightmare on the weekends bring your lazyboy chair and hard hat. Tail end of twilight can be real nice though.

The course is okay for a casual day of golf- cute with minimal challenges. Mr Rude was right on our tail, telling us to stay on cart path etc. He could have focussed instead on fixing the signages directing people to their next hole. His famous first line seems to be a rude ' have you guys been here before' . That particular day we were in the wrong to start with, so we let him be. I am not enthusiastic about going back although my daughter and son inlay live practically next door- I never go anyplace where I get feel I am not welcome.

I'm new to this course but have played it many times this summer. It is a great little course - close to home and a good value. The condition of the course is very good and all of the staff members I have interacted with are friendly and welcoming. I consider Unicorn my home course and will keep coming back.

Wide open, but some of the fairways are in very rough shape

Disappointed. Upon check in, i got a 'recommendation' to go play elsewhere and then got charged full price for a 12 year old. I have no desire to go back. No one was rude to us/me and they got us out without us having a prior tee time... Thanks!Whoever is in charge should keep in mind, it's the little things that count. I was with my kid so i didn't want to start a argument over a few bucks. The younger guys who work there are A+ .

We didn't go golfing that day, but this sure is a nice looking golf course. It was beautiful in the late afternoon sunlight and it's in a nice suburb of Boston. Everything looked very well kept and everyone was courteous and pleasant. I would definitely like to come back and golf here sometime when I have time. It seems like a nice place.

Golfed this course Wednesday and let me tell I have never been more disappointed in my life. Jeff Barnes is a complete disgrace to the sport of golf. He is rude, arrogant and straight up obnoxious. The town of Stoneham needs to fire this man immediately. However the young college kid behind the counter, made my experience a little better. He was nice and extremely helpful. To the town of Stoneham: Fire Jeff Barnes

Course was nice, however the start Jeff was extremely rude and ruined the experience. Had a bad first shot and he told us never to take practice swings and put our egos in check. He then followed us in a golf cart for 2 holes hoping for us to take a bad shot to yell again. I will not be returning to this course.

The course was fine however this pompous nimrod who I assume is this Jeff guy from the other review ruined our time.My friend and I checked in fine with a really nice lady behind the counter, able to help us out because we ran a tad late but no one was behind us. Tee off the first hole then Mr.golfidle Duntee comes walking over. 'Hey have you guys played here before' we replied no, me still thinking oh cool this guy is gonna welcome us to the course and maybe tell us about the lay out. Nope ,the welcome wagon lost its wheel when the next words out of this guys mouth were 'you guys need know the rules' in the most rude and unwelcoming tone I ever heard. So he explained the rules which pretty much entailed stay on the cart paths and only pull out to get you ball.... Which is legit the rule on any course. He gave us a long winded lecture about this while maintaining his snooty attitude and arrogance. Honestly probably wont go back unless I hear that he is no longer there. It felt disrespectful and i dont know if its because me and my friend are under 30 and he doesnt like the next generation continuing the sport of golf or what his deal is but it ruined my trip there.

I rate this course one star for one reason and one reason only: JEFF.One morning a few weeks ago I was among a foursome (all professional third year law students in our late 20's and early 30's) who played at Unicorn. Having played the course a couple of times prior, I espoused the virtues of its wide fairways, well-kept greens, and reasonable greens fees... had I known we would be enjoying those with a side of sanctimonious, pedantic lecturing from the course pro, we would have chose to play elsewhere. The issues started when we arrived just a few minutes prior to our scheduled tee-time. Although we left Boston with plenty of time to spare, we ran into some transportation issues on the way. So we courteously called to let them know we may be a few minutes behind. From the moment we stepped into the clubhouse Jeff was immediately abrupt with our group and the other pro shop staff, lecturing the kind gentleman at the register about the proper way to expeditiously get us onto the course. Once we were out and schlepping our clubs from the lot to the cart park (there is an inexplicable ban on driving carts into the parking lot at this course), Jeff immediately targeted the gentleman among us who had a cooler (small 12x15x24 soft-side on rollers).*It should be noted here that our tee-time was before 9 a.m. so none of us had anything to drink, nor were we acting obnoxious that early in the morning* Before my friend even got to the cart from the parking lot, Jeff immediately began a screed of questioning about the contents of the cooler, telling him that if there was 'even a drop' of alcohol in the cooler, he would kick us off the course and call the police. Finally, he informed us that he would be searching the cooler for contraband. My friend, fed up with Jeff's inquisition, returned the cooler to the car as, among the bottled water and snacks contained therein, there was a six pack (*GASP*) of Michelob Ultra in the cooler (we went to the BC football game later in the afternoon and planned to tailgate a little). This prompted Jeff to kick his lecture up a notch, shaming us as we 'should have known better' than to allow him to be 'so obvious' about bringing alcohol onto the course, telling us that this is a 'a public course, and there are laws.' He proceeded to ask us where we were from. When we responded 'Connecticut, New York, Florida and Louisiana', Jeff puffed out his chest and exclaimed, 'Well you're not in Kansas or wherever anymore. This is Massachusetts. We have laws.'*It's worth a reminder here that we are all third-year law students... we are patently aware that there are laws in Massachusetts*It was then that Jeff really found his stride. He spilled into an absurd, snark-filled diatribe about how and when to tee off, pace of play, where to drive the cart... generally treating us like children who had never swung a golf club (we had).Once he (finally) relented and we teed off, Jeff followed us to the first green. Two of who were parked along the right side of the fairway near the cart path about 50 yards shy of the green (read: 'NOT INAPPROPRIATELY PARKED') getting ready to attempt their chips when Jeff zipped over. Before they were even able to grab their clubs, Jeff jumped into their cart unprompted AND BEGAN TO DRIVE IT ACROSS THE FAIRWAY toward the second tee box. My friend actually had to chase the cart to be able to grab his clubs out of his bag.Although the remainder of the round went off without a hitch (somehow we managed to figure out the rules of golf without Jeff's assistance), we noted that the garbage cans at nearly every tee box contained beer bottles and beer cans (In the law that's called 'selective enforcement', Jeff).Suffice it to say that, although the grounds crew has done a great job with such a small municipal course--and although the remainder of the staff was perfectly kind and welcoming--Jeff ruined our experience and lost at least four customers. I have and will continue to tell this story as a cautionary tale to all the golfers I know.

I didn't know that the course was taken over by a management company! I walked up thinking it was as always first come first serve! To my surprise I needed a tee time! The woman behind the desk took a look and found me a spot. However, I lucked out and joined a threesome heading out. The greens were like they hadn't been cut in about a month. However, that aside the fairways were the greenest I have ever seen them!! The round took four and a half hours for nine holes. ( just a bit took long) I have been playing there off and on for a better part of twenty years. Will I return? Maybe but I guess I will need a tee time.

The course was in decent shape but the golf pro, Jeff Barnes, ruined the entire experience. It was an early morning tee time when a group of friends accidentally used a cart path that had two small red flags to pick up their golf bags. Jeff had just finished a round of golf which apparently didn't end well and proceeded to scream and stomp his because they missed his barely visible flags. Once he finished referring to my friends as idiots he jumped in the cart, whipped it around the corner and slammed on the breaks. We tried to explain that the cart path wasn't clearly marked and it was an honest mistake but he continued to shout and belittle us. I will not visit unicorn again until Jeff has been terminated and removed from the premises.

It pains me to say it because I grew up on this course. But, 8 minute tee times caused major delays. The starter was very rude and made comments every time someone had a bad first swing. The course was in terrible shape.... The only silver lining was the very sweet woman who worked the register. Needless to say I'll never play here again!

We didn't plan on playing golf at all on our visit to Boston. The weather was cold and blustery. We saw a small opening in the weather where the temp would be around 46 degrees with light wind and booked Unicorn via golfnow without ever having played there (despite the 2 guys who got pissed at some Jeff guy, I guess because they wanted to bring beer on the course). I've played golf everywhere in the US and other parts of the world and most courses won't allow you to bring your own beer. Anyway, the course was in decent shape and it is a far cry from a small '9 hole munny'. In fact, the course is difficult and fairly long. Since it was mid-november we did finish in about an hour and 50 minutes, walking, because carts were not permitted due to the wetness on the course. It's worth a look if you only want to play 9. Cost more than most Metro N.Y. 9 hole courses, but Boston is not cheap.

Really nice and accommodating staff. Greens are well kept. The fairways have some blotchy spots but if you give yourself some preferred lies you'll have a fun 9 holes to play and the price is right.

Played the course today with my daughter. The staff were friendly and explained all about the course before we teed off. It took us just over 2 hours to play 9 which was pretty good considering the amount of people out there. The greens were in pretty good shape as well as the fairways. I would definetly return.

Not a bad little 9 hole course with straight wide fairways and no water hazards. Does have senior rates as well as resident rates. Under new management this year (2016) so we will have to see how that goes.

Real bad attitude from guy at front desk in pro shop. We ask him for two carts so we don't take too long finding our shots he arrogantly says NO YOU CANT!! Like a parent scolding a child. Also grounds could be better and price to high

A new management company took this over in the summer of 2016. So far the changes are observably poor. Prices increased yet the fairways are as yellow as the Sahara desert. I hope they get their act together soon.

You hit a ball. Then you go find it. Then you hit the ball forward and repeat until it gets in a hole. Sometimes you cant find your ball....That is when you see an Unicorn. Good course, thanks.

Literally the worst course I've ever played. Even a perfect drive off the crab grass tee box will land you dead center in the fairway that's a mound of dirt. I've never been so dirty from golf but every swing leaves you in a cloud of dust and dirt. At the end of every hole, you have no idea where you're going because they have zero signs or give zero f's about where you go from there. No yardage markers or hole markers for half the holes. I never write reviews, but I was downright offended that on a 93 degree day they can't even put one water cooler or fountain out on the course to drink. I finished up 9 at 7:00 dying of thirst and the only water bubbler on the premises wasn't functioning and the pro shop was closed. The only bathrooms were also closed. They have the nicest kid in the world working the grounds though. I asked him two questions and he was great and helpful. He deserves better.

I played this course for the first time in August and I really enjoyed it. They have 3 or 4 par 4's that are over 400 yards and I bet they can be very challenging on a windy day. I actually enjoyed everything about this course except for the price. They have no discount for the back nine and I believe the rate was $23 with a pull cart per nine. $46 with a pull cart for 18 holes, really? And no senior rates. I can play a championship level course like The Meadows of Peabody for $36 with a drive cart.
