These are challenging, beautiful golf courses. Tees are spaced a good distance from greens, so not a lot of distractions from the trailing group. A hard walk but doable. For whatever reason, I have a hard time scoring well on the Schoolmaster course. Bonus - usually no problem getting a tee time!

Played Fightin' Joe on August 17, 2019. The course was in near perfect condition and was a fair test of skills. The staff was helpful and genuinely appreciative of our business. A few truly picture-worthy moments

Excellent golf course!!! Played both Fighting Joe and Schoolmaster on April 7th and courses were beautiful. Fairways had some rough spots but it has been a long winter. Wish we could have waited a month or so for top conditions. Only reason not 5 stars is for the price I don't think you should have to purchase range balls. That's just me. Staff was very accommodating and polite. Unless your are Hercules or a PGA professional or just enjoy Driver, 3 Wood, 3 Wood and not get to the green I won't suggest playing the tips. 716 yard par 5 LONG!!!! Overall would definitely recommend playing in the area.

Even if you're not good at golf, like me, a day or two on the RTJ Trail at the Shoals is a treat. Both courses, Fighting Joe and the Schoolmaster, provide a mix of challenging holes and beautiful sights in wooded serenity. Especially enjoyable are the nerve-fraying 18th holes on each course, which overlook the Tennessee River. Apart from the Marriott across the river, there aren't any high-end hotel options in this neck of the woods, which may account for why the Shoals isn't more widely recognized as among the RTJ's best venues.

beautiful grounds, like a postcard. great course, high quality employees. just wish they kept restaurant opened a little later. we missed dinner there because they close so early. but overall a must visit if you have a golf lover in the family. we want to make it a father's day tradition to have him play a RTJ course every June. pristine courses so far.

This is by far the BEST golf course in North Alabama. Other golf courses in Muscle Shoals and Florence don't even compare to RTJ The Shoals. Also the driving range and practice facilities here are extremely nice.

Here at The Shoals, the Robert Trent Jones Golf trail is represented by two excellent championship courses. Unlike its relatively open, linksy companion (the Fighting Joe course), The Schoolmaster is a more classical, parkland layout, with many pleasantly undulating tree-lined holes, especially so on the back-nine. You will doubtless be told that the Schoolmaster will exact a more stringent examination of your straight-hitting game, but don't be fooled into thinking this is a wickedly tight course.

My first time playing The Trail. Our group played Schoolmaster and Fighting Joe the last week of October. We didn't expect great conditions this time of the year. Fairway grass was pretty long due to some rain the previous days, so tee shots had no roll. Adding the wind...it really played long. My impression .. some beautiful hole layouts. Some great views. Normally, I would have loved the challenge. However, the actual golfing experience was ruined by many extremely unfair pin placements. I was really shocked. It was like Sunday at the U.S. Open. Two of us are single handicappers back home, and we 3-putted 50% of the time. If this is normal SOP, then the pro shop really needs to hand out DETAILED pin sheets suggesting were to aim your approach shot, and showing slope and ridges You pay a lot of money to play these courses, so pin sheets is not a big ask! These pin placements were ridiculous!

I've been playing golf here for over a decade and you are not going to find many places with a better piece of land to build golf courses. They're not always pristine but rarely in poor shape, and there are plenty of fun, interesting holes on both courses.

Do not follow Google maps the directions are not correct and will take you to the middle of downtown. They are by the river, call the golf shop to help you get there if necessary.
